Titanium Coating Technology

Improved performance in wet and dry machining

The use of Titanium coatings allow for the use of higher speeds and feeds, with greatly increased tool life. Tolerances can be held for longer periods with improved workpiece finishes. The coatings bond a thermal insulation barrier to the tool to reject heat from the tool surface back into the chip. It improves the mechanical strength of the cutting edge with higher hardness and a lower friction coefficient that allows the chip to flow off of the cutting surface. The coating also provides a chemical resistance to the force of heat, pressure, coolant and the work piece material present at the cutting edge. It protects the tools substrate from these forces, stabilizing the cutting edge.

TiN (Titanium Nitride)

Micro Hardness: 80RC
Max Temp: 600ºC/1100ºF
Coating Color: Gold

Primary Application:

A good general purpose coating that is excellent for iron based materials, and low and medium strength steels. It has excellent wear resistance, thermal stability, and a low coefficient of friction that improves thermal transfer of heat away from the cutting edge.

TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride)

Micro Hardness: 90RC
Max Temp: 400ºC/750ºF
Coating Color: Blue/Grey

Primary Application:

This coating has a higher hardness and is recommended for cast irons, high silicon aluminum alloys, copper and other abrasive materials. Coolant must be applied to control temperature at the cutting edge.

TiAIN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride)

Micro Hardness: 90RC
Max Temp: 800ºC/1470ºF
Coating Color: Violet/Grey

Primary Application:

Excellent for high strength steels, hard due steels and high temperature alloys. It is designed for dry machining, which eliminates thermal shocks created by flood coolants.
